Undergraduates and Postgraduates Research Contest 2018

I. ORGANIZATION AND SCOPE

Research contest with the topic of Health Benefits of Rice Bran Oil is organized for the first time by the International Association of Rice Bran Oil (IARBO). The contest will take place concurrently with the 5th International Conference of Rice Bran Oil (ICRBO) in Hanoi, Vietnam on May 24, 2018.

In the last few years, rice bran oil has become a new entrant in the category of cooking oils and perhaps the healthiest for a number of reasons. IARBO invites young talented undergraduates and postgraduates to study various health benefits and applications of rice bran oil with their knowledge and expertise.

Goals of the contest:

  • To give opportunity to undergraduates and postgraduates to share their ideas and research results at an ideal platform that provides visibility for their works
  • To provide opportunity for undergraduates and postgraduates to interact with experts/professors/market players to share idea, gain insight and understand possible practical applications
  • To provide feedback to undergraduates and postgraduates about their research and presentation by panel of distinguished judges from industry and academic
  • To recognize and reward outstanding undergraduates and postgraduates

II. THEME

The theme of contest is “Rice bran oil – The World’s Premium Healthy Oil”. We invite paper with original results of theoretical, empirical, conceptual and experimental research related to the following topic:

  • Research: Health benefits of rice bran oil
  • Application: Various applications derived from rice bran oil

III. AWARDS

Awards

  • 1 Diamond Prize: USD 5,000
  • 2 Platinum Prizes: USD 3,000
  • 3 Gold Prizes: USD 2,000
  • 4 Silver Prizes: USD 1,000

A travel grant covering expenses for attending the 5th ICRBO 2018, including economy class air tickets between your home country and Vietnam, conference registration, transportation, accommodation, and meals will be provided to 2 undergraduates/postgraduates per team whose paper are accepted.

IV. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Application must fulfill the following eligibility criteria:

  • Contestants must be undergraduates pursuing an academic degree or postgraduates pursuing a master at the time of initial submission. Fair assessment will be given to contestants who are pursuing a degree in Food Technology, Food Engineering, Agriculture, Bio Technology, Bio Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmacy and Medicine.
  • Age below 27.
  • Each competition entry must be authored by contestant only – neither supervisors nor lecturers are allowed as co-authors.

V. SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACT

Abstract submitted must conform to the abstract format and submission guidelines. Paper must be in English and PDF format. Paper should contain original and unpublished material that is not under review at any forum, including journals, conferences and workshops. A panel of experts will review the papers. Teams which possess the most potential ideas will go through an online interview. Up to 10 teams in total will be chosen to participate in the research competition at ICRBO 2018.

The selected teams will be sponsored (if necessary) to carry out researches derived from their ideas. If contestant wishes to get sponsorship from IARBO, he must agree IARBO to become a co-author of his research and IARBO has an equivalent ownership to this research.

VI. PRESENTATION

1. Poster

The teams need to prepare posters to present their researches. The posters must comply with the Poster Presentation Guidelines. The presenters must provide the content of their researches and illustration in a size and format suitable for poster display. Each team will present orally at the beginning of the contest. When they have finished, they will man their posters, during that time the judges can approach them with questions.

2. Oral

The oral portion is limited to 10 minutes per speaker and must comply with the Presentation Guidelines. Presentation in English is preferable.

Research work is reviewed by a panel of experts that will evaluate the works based on the overall quality, originality, and relevance to health benefits of rice bran oil. The research will be evaluated based on:

  • Quality of work
  • Novelty of approach
  • Significance of the contribution in the field of rice bran oilv
  • Clarity of written presentation
  • Quality of visual and oral presentation (poster)

VII. SUBMISSION PROCEDURE AND IMPORTANT DEADLINES

Team (unlimited number of members, but only 2 representatives are sponsored to attend the contest in Hanoi, Vietnam)

The number of the submission
Maximum 2 ideas per team. A title and abstracts of no more than 400 words. Abstract format
2. Idea Screening
Idea Screening Period
March 1, 2018 – March 7, 2018
Ideas will be reviewed by the judges.

Idea screening
Ideas will be judged from various viewpoints such as creativity and feasibility.
3. Online interview
Online Interview Period
March 8, 2018 to 12:00 noon March 14, 2018

Contestants will be informed about the decision of the Selection Committee by e-mail after the review process. A quick individual online interview will be conducted by a judge to further understand the selected ideas.The ideas which have passed the online interview will be sponsored to be conducted in reality.
